ACTION AGAINST ISRAEL Portugal’s latest diplomatic stance is divided between supporting it’s long-time friendship, and strongly criticising Israel. Portugal has just joined other European countries in condemning Israel’s aggression and expansion in the Palestinian West Bank following its continuing atrocities in Gaza. The major decline in relations includes Portugal imposing sanctions on imports from the Israel controlled West Bank. It has done so in collaboration with Britain and 11 other European countries. Like the others, Portugal advocated a two-state solution that Israel has always rejected. Portugal’s former prime minister now Secretary General of the United Nation, Antonio Guterres, has always advocated a two-state solution. As that is unlikely to come about any time soon, criticism, non-cooperation and conflict are likely to continue indefinitely.
